Downscaler
Main downscaler for reducing video to display resolution. This filter is used whenever the source resolution is larger than the display resolution.
Available Options
| Filter | Internal Name | Description | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| None (same as upscaler) | none | Use the same filter as specified for the upscaler | -- |
| Hermite | hermite | Hermite-weighted averaging | Fast |
| Bilinear | bilinear | Bilinear (triangle) averaging | Fast |
| Bicubic | bicubic | Bicubic interpolation | Fast |
| Gaussian | gaussian | Gaussian smoothing | Fast |
| Catmull-Rom | catmull_rom | Catmull-Rom cubic spline | Medium |
| Mitchell | mitchell | Mitchell-Netravali cubic spline | Medium |
| Lanczos | lanczos | Lanczos reconstruction | Medium |
Default: Hermite (hermite)
Recommended Settings
- Hermite is the default and provides smooth, artifact-free downscaling suitable for most content.
- Mitchell is a good choice for preserving sharpness while avoiding ringing, commonly recommended for downscaling photographic content.
- Lanczos produces the sharpest downscale but may introduce ringing on high-contrast edges.
- None reuses the upscaler filter for downscaling, which is rarely ideal since upscaling and downscaling have different quality tradeoffs.
